Archive Drawings from 1956 to 1965
Founded in 1904 by Walter Wilkins and Thomas Mitchell. Wilkins & Mitchell was a manufacturer of heavy engineering machinery and would later expand into domestic appliances. Walter had previously been head designer at Samuel Platt, a Wednesbury-based manufacturer of heavy machinery and machine tools. The company would develop close relationships with Rubery Owen and The Birmingham Carriage Company, designing and manufacturing several new machines to the company's specifications. Such was the success of the hydraulic presses designed for Rubery Owen, that Wilkins & Mitchell would go on to become the leading UK manufacturer of power presses.
