Archive Drawings from 1947 to 1950
Founded in 1914, Suffolk Iron Foundry started as a general forge and manufacturer but found initial success in developing the 'Suffolk' range of lawnmowers after the failure of a large contract forced the company to pivot into specialist castings. The company would move into welding in the 1920s as welded metal fabrications were set to overtake the use of traditional cast iron structures. Patents were acquired in 1929 for a new method of welding bronze, and the 'Sifbronze' welding rod was developed.
The company would become part of the Qualcast group in 1958 and would continue production of its welding equipment, lawnmowers and supporting range until a management-led buy-out and merger in 1988 between Birmid Qualcast & Blue Circle.
