Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft was founded in 1912 as the aerial department of Armstrong Whitworth & Co. the same company that founded luxury car maker Armstrong Siddeley; another Tildesley customer.
The company merged with Vickers in 1927 to become Vickers-Armstrong and was sold to Hawker Aircraft in 1935, with the brand and name surviving until 1963 when it was merged with Gloster Aircraft and the names dropped from their product.
