20 Forged Components For the Rolls Royce V12 Griffon Engine
Rolls Royce is one of W.H. Tildesleys most recognisable aerospace/aviation brands, with the company producing forged components for their different engine models during the Second World War.
This included the Rolls-Royce Griffon, a 37-litre V-12 engine, earning its name after a bird of prey, the Griffon vulture. It was designed to meet Royal Navy specifications for an engine capable of generating exceptional power at low altitudes. The engine first saw use in 1938, used within new aircraft designs such as the Fairey Firefly.
The iconic Supermarine Spitfire also saw adaptions to accommodate the Griffon engine as it was slightly larger than the Merlin most commonly used. The Mk XII was the first Spitfire powered by a Griffon engine and at low altitude, it was one of the fastest aircraft in the world.
