The namesake of company founder Albert John Stevens. AJS was a Wolverhampton based motorcycle manufacturer. Producing motorcycles between 1910 and 1945 until being wound up and Sold to Matchless\/AMC, who continued to produce new badge-engineered models until AMC failed in 1966.<\/p><\/p>

Abingdon King Dick is a manufacturer of hand tools based in Tyseley, Birmingham. The company has also produced motorcycles, engines, and chains over its 167-year history, but now focuses solely on its hand tool business.<\/p>\r\n

The company is named after its ‘King Dick’ range, namely the King Dick Spanner, which got its name from the founders' prize-winning bulldog, which still features in the company logo to this day.<\/p><\/p>

Albion worked with the war office during WWI and WWII producing lorries and transport vehicles under contract, as well as Enfield Number 2 Revolvers, 24’000 of which were produced by Albion by 1945.<\/p><\/p>

Ariel Motors (J.S.) Ltd was established in 1932 and based in Selly Oak, Birmingham. As a producer of motorcycles in a saturated market they ultimately struggled to find their place and make an impression on the motorcycle industry. In 1944 the company was sold to BSA (Birmingham Small Arms Company) who were unsuccessful in reviving the brand. In 1965 production of Ariel motorbikes ceased.<\/p><\/p>

Armstrong Siddeley Motors was established in 1919 and is best known for the production of high-end luxury cars but they also diversified into the aircraft engine market. In 1935 they merged with Hawker Aircraft and became Hawker Siddeley. In 1960 they merged with Bristol Aero Engines and became Bristol Siddeley. Ultimately ended up merging with Rolls Royce in 1966. Despite several mergers with aircraft manufacturers, car production was maintained between 1919 and 1960 with several models adopting names used for aircraft and jet engines such as the Lancaster, Hurricane, and Sapphire.<\/p><\/p>

AC is among one of the oldest British founded car manufacturers. Founded in 1901, the company became Auto Carriers LTD in 1911, producing three-wheeled tricars and their 'Mighty Atom' also known as the Sociable.<\/p>\r\n

Its first four-wheeled car was produced in 1913, just before production was halted and switched to War Time production; during which the AC works produced shells and fuses. Post-war, the company produced large numbers of vehicles under government contracts.<\/p>\r\n

The company would change hands and liquidate many times over the years with the nationalisation and collapse of the British Automotive Industry and was relaunched in 2022 with a new corporate structure.<\/p><\/p>

Bristol Cars was the car division of Bristol Aeroplane Co, another W.H. Tildesley customer. The company founded its car division as a means to keep its workforce employed after the armistice eliminated the demand for fighting aircraft. Bristol developed a reputation for high-quality luxury vehicles with design elements reminiscent of their aeronautical roots.<\/p>\r\n

The company would continue under various owners until its administration in 2011, the intellectual property now resides with investor Jason Wharton, and the future of the brand is uncertain.<\/p><\/p>

The British Tool & Engineering Company was established in 1915 and operated from Bushbury in Wolverhampton. They are best known for the production of mechanics' hand tools and in 1920 had established their position in the market under the Britool trademark.<\/p><\/p>

Starting as a producer of Clippers and Sheer Shearers, the company took on production of the gearbox for the Ariel Square in 1930, and by 1965 was supplying 40% of the total steering units required by the British Motor Trade.<\/p><\/p>

Charles H Pugh formed a self-named company to contain his various businesses, with ATCO Mowers being one of them. 'ATCO' got its name from 'Atlas Chain Co' A company owned by Charles H Pugh Ltd, where some of the components for the first ATCO mower 'The Standard' were produced.<\/p>\r\n

900 ATCO Standards were produced in 1921, with production accelerating into the tens of thousands within 5 years. Which makes the standard the first truly mass-produced motor mower.<\/p><\/p>

Tildesley is rightfully proud to have worked and still works in the field of mobility and prosthetic devices.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>

Chas A Blatchford has been designing and producing limb prostheses since 1890. With the unfortunate surge in demand for practical limb prostheses following WW1 & two, Blatchford participated in early discussions with the government regarding prosthetics for veterans and has been a provider of prosthetic limbs to the NHS since its inception in 1948.<\/p><\/p>

The brand relaunched in 2019 with a focus on high quality British made cycling components.<\/p><\/p>

The original London based 'Commercial Cars' business was founded in 1905 to produce trucks, but liquidated in 1923. Eventually becoming part of Rootes Securities, another WHT customer. The company was known for Vans, Lorries, Fire Engines, and Buses.<\/p><\/p>

Founded by pioneers in the production of internal combustion engines, Crossley Brothers. Crossley Motors started car production in 1909, ceasing in WWI when Crossley was contracted by the war office to produce staff cars, light trucks & ambulances for the Royal Flying Core. Continued in the post-war years with car and commercial vehicle production until 1948, when the company was sold to AEC.<\/p><\/p>

W.H Tildesley worked with Dayton Cycle Company in 1949 to produce a left and right set of fork ends.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>

Founded by Charles Day in 1908, Dayton Cycle Co was a manufacturer of both Bicycles and Motorcycles based in Shoreditch, London & later Park Royal Works, North Acton. The firm produced various models of Roadster Bicycles and lightweight bicycles from Reynolds Tube Co.<\/p>\r\n

Like many bicycle makers of the time, Dayton also had forays into motorcycle production as early as 1913, with an agreement with Villiers to provide engines in 1920 increasing Dayton's capacity to produce motorcycles. The company would return focus to bicycles post WWII until 1955 when an ill-fated attempt at entering the scooter market damaged the company's standing and financials. Ultimately leading to the company ceasing production in 1960.<\/p><\/p>

The De Havilland Aircraft Company was a pioneering aircraft design and manufacturing company based out of the Stag Lane Aerodrome in Edgware, North London. Founded by Geoffrey De Havilland and and backed by George Holt Thomas, founder of Airco, Geoffrey's previous employer.<\/p>\r\n

The company focused on the emerging commercial and private aircraft markets and produced iconic planes such as the Dragon and Dragon Riptide in the inter-war years. Post WWII, they became locked in a fight for the Trans-Atlantic aircraft market; a fight it ultimately lost to Boeing, merging with Hawker Siddeley in 1963, at which time the brand became defunct.<\/p><\/p>

After the war, the company expanded into bench lathes, creating a new company in Denford Machine Tools, which became known for their 'Viceroy' & 'Box-Ford' range of wood and metal lathes. The company is still trading today, with the core of the business focused on CNC machinery, software, and training.<\/p><\/p>

E.R.F was established in 1932 by Edwin Richard Foden, as a rival to his late father's commercial vehicle company 'Foden' which he had resigned from unceremoniously a year prior, for advocating a move to diesel over steam engines, which Foden had been using to power their vehicles since 1900.<\/p>\r\n

ERF would opt for sourcing components rather than in-house manufacture, which served them well throughout their existence. ERF would go on to produce fire engines under license, and export to foreign markets under the 'Western Star' badge. E.R.F. would eventually be sold to MAN in 2000.<\/p><\/p>

Enfield Cycle Company produced Motorcycles, Bicycles, Lawnmowers, and Stationary Engines under the brand name 'Royal Enfield' which is among one of the most lauded brand names in legacy motorcycles. The Redditch based manufacturer produced motorcycles from 1901 until its closure in 1967. The brand name now lives on in the successor company; Royal Enfield India.<\/p><\/p>

Hugh Steeper specialised in producing upper limb prosthetic devices. With a high demand for prostheses following the end of WWI. Steeper was founded by Mr Hugh Steeper on 19th November 1920. He would attend the local hospital in Roehampton personally to measure and fit prosthetic arms for returning veterans.<\/p>\r\n

It wasn’t until March 1921 that Hugh Steeper Limited would become an operating company. Steeper is still trading as Steeper Group, offering upper and lower-limb prosthetics, clinical services, and patient aftercare.<\/p><\/p>

The company would try to expand into buses, cars, and light-duty trucks in the post-war period to mixed success. The company's assets would be merged into J.I. Case in 1985, with the remaining company being renamed 'Navistar International'. Which is still trading today and selling commercial vehicles under the 'International' brand.<\/p><\/p>

JE Hanger is an American manufacturer of prosthetic limbs, founded by James Edward Hanger. An engineering student who became one of the first amputees of the American Civil War, after a cannonball tore through his leg less than 2 days after enlisting.<\/p>\r\n

The company is still operating 160 years later as Hanger Inc., providing prosthetic devices and patient aftercare.<\/p><\/p>

The Cliff family business can be traced back to Walsall as far back as 1793, with Jabez Cliff Tibbits being the 7th generation to run the business. The company produced two lines of products. The Cliff Brand, which focussed on bridles, and Barnsby Saddle, which were considered among the finest quality saddles in the world. Barnsby saddles were used to outfit the Royal Horse Artillery & The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, as well as various British Police Forces. They must have performed well, as Jabez was knighted by King George VI in 1948, and was later elected Mayor of Walsall.<\/p><\/p>

James Cycles was well-received in the market with their range featuring many lightweight and economical two-stroke models alongside larger four-stroke V-Twins. James is also well known for supporting the war effort with special lightweight models supplied to the British Army.<\/p><\/p>

The company's founding is contested to be either 1670 or 1750, with the consensus being that Thomas Gibbons set up as a locksmith in 1670, with a later generation succeeding him in the business. Examples of James Gibbons' metalwork are in the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, & The Cambridge University Library. James Gibbons is still trading and still based in The Black Country.<\/p><\/p>

John Hawley & Co was established in 1837 as a manufacturer and retailer of outdoor leisure goods, camping equipment, accessories, rope, and sheeting. The company produced tents and marquees for civilian use under the 'Goodall' brand, and under contract to his majesty's government. The company transitioned into military bags and packing gear during the war years.<\/p>\r\n

The company became the main constituent of The Hawley Group in 1980, along with a disparate range of other businesses and interests. The group acquired the US burglar and fire alarm group ADT in 1987 and changed its name to ADT in 1988.<\/p><\/p>

Joseph Sankey was established in 1921 as a general manufacturer of a wide range of metal goods. The name was synonymous with domestic hollowware through their Sankey-Sheldon partnership and their Sphinx Brand, as well as steel office furniture and vending machines. But the company's range was much wider than that.<\/p>\r\n

Sankey would, unfortunately, fall victim to the manufacturing industry collapse of the 1980s and would slowly be sold by division until the company was officially wound down in 2004.<\/p><\/p>

The company became a part of Guy Motors along with Sunbeam. Where they stayed until their voluntary liquidation during the nationalisation of the motor industry.<\/p><\/p>

Levis Motorcycles were manufactured by Butterfield Ltd (Butterfield Brothers) aka British Butterfield of Levis Works in Stechford, Birmingham.
The production of Levis Motorcycles started in 1911 and after several successes in the Isle of Man TT lightweight classes, they quickly became renowned as one of Britain's leading manufacturers of two-stroke engines.<\/p><\/p>

Leyland Motors was born in 1907 following a rename of The Lancashire Steam Motor Company which was founded in 1896 in Leyland town. In the late 1800s, they produced their first steam-powered vehicles but by the early 1900s, they moved towards the manufacture of more commercially viable petrol-powered engines and vehicles.<\/p>\r\n

Following some early success with the production of motorcars they ultimately became best known for the production of heavier commercial vehicles such as vans, buses, and trucks.<\/p><\/p>

Established by Henry Collier, the brand was known for its innovation and excellence, making the first V-twin engine in 1905 for example. The Great War propelled Matchless, producing motorcycles and sidecars for the military. Post-war, their bikes gained popularity for their reliability and performance.<\/p>\r\n

The '30s marked a golden era with iconic models like the Silver Hawk and Silver Arrow being launched. However economic challenges post-WWII led to a merger with AJS and an eventual production halt.<\/p><\/p>

Ok-Supreme Motors was established in 1882 and based in Bromley Street, Birmingham. Following the First World War, they experimented with the development of a 292cc two-stroke motor but ultimately decided to utilise more successful engines supplied by other leading brands such as J.A.P (J. A. Prestwich Industries) and Matchless along with gearboxes from Burman Gears.<\/p><\/p>

They had two sister companies in British Wire Products and National Standard, another wire manufacturer. Both were based on the Parsons site. Renamed Parsons Chain Co. in 1952, the company produced high-tensile chains, pit cage suspension gear, and conveyor chains. The American Chain & Cable Co. would sell the company in 1970 to Babcock International.<\/p><\/p>

Founded in 1900, Phoenix was a small outfit producing very early iterations of the motor car. Starting with bicycles, the company began to offer a 'forecar' attachment, which would replace the front wheel of a bicycle with a Minerva Engine supported by 2 wheels with a central seat called the 'trimo'.<\/p>\r\n

Although popular and well-made, Phoenix would struggle to scale production and remain competitive in the industry, with the last Phoenix being made in 1928.<\/p><\/p>

Founded in 1912 as part of the Riley Cycle Co, the Coventry based company started producing complete cars in 1913, with Coach Building and Engine divisions in Riley Motor Manufacturing Co and Riley Engine Company Limited. The brand traded independently until 1938 when the company and its subsidiaries went into Receivership. The business and its assets (minus Riley Engine Co) were then bought by Lord Nuffield of Morris who continued Riley production until 1947, at which time the works would be consolidated into Nuffield’s MG factory at Abingdon.<\/p><\/p>

The company would face hardship in the 1950s & 60s as road infrastructure was greatly improved and despite efforts to downsize and pivot the company into construction equipment. The firm went bankrupt in 1984. With assets and goodwill passed to Becorit Ltd.<\/p><\/p>

The company was acquired by Dowty Equipment in 1959 to become Dowty-Rotol. Dowty itself was sold in 2001 to Smiths Aerospace, a division of General Electric.<\/p><\/p>

From production commencing and the start of WWI, the Luton site would grow the factory and capacity from 180 completed bearings a day to over 4000. The company would be made public in 1936 and expand their works again. The company would be the largest bearing supplier during WWII and the only British firm to supply all 4 main bearing types. Founded in 1914, Suffolk Iron Foundry started as a general forge and manufacturer but found initial success in developing the 'Suffolk' range of lawnmowers after the failure of a large contract forced the company to pivot into specialist castings. The company would move into welding in the 1920s as welded metal fabrications were set to overtake the use of traditional cast iron structures. Patents were acquired in 1929 for a new method of welding bronze, and the 'Sifbronze' welding rod was developed.<\/p>\r\n

The company would become part of the Qualcast group in 1958 and would continue production of its welding equipment, lawnmowers and supporting range until a management-led buy-out and merger in 1988 between Birmid Qualcast & Blue Circle.<\/p><\/p>

The Vaughan Crane Co was first established in 1877 trading under Vaughan and Stubbs. In 1885 they started to manufacture overhead crane systems and subsequently became specialists in lifting and handling equipment. Up until the 1970s they were producing overhead gantry cranes, hoists, and jib cranes.<\/p><\/p>

W.H. Tildesley Ltd produced hundreds of components for Vauxhall Motors between 1931 and 1958. This included bracketry for chassis frames, levers for clutch and brake systems, and connecting rods and rocker arms for engines.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>

Vauxhall Motors, established in 1857, is one of many British car manufacturers with deep roots in early car production. Initially producing pumps and engines for the marine sector, they produced their first motorcar in 1903.<\/p>\r\n

Following financial struggle and reduced demand, the company was acquired by General Motors Corporation in 1925. By utilising GM’s experience in production, design, and engineering Vauxhall was able to compete more effectively in the British market at a lower price point.<\/p><\/p>

W.H. Tildesley Ltd produced components for Veloce Ltd between 1927 and 1964 and can be found on many Velocette models including the KSS, KTT, LE, MAC, MOV, MSS, Scrambler, Thruxton, Venom, and Viper.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>

Veloce Ltd was one of many motorcycle manufacturers based in the Midlands that produced motorcycles under the more commonly recognised name Velocette.<\/p>\r\n

Founded in 1904, they started life as a small family-operated firm specialising in hand-built motorcycles, gaining them a global reputation for quality craftsmanship. Throughout their life, they saw varying success in the Isle of Man TT with notable domination in Junior TT races.<\/p><\/p>

W.H. Tildesley worked with Vessa between 1958 & 1982. Producing components for their prosthetic devices.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>

Vessa were a manufacturer of limb prostheses, operating as a subsidiary of Vokes Limited, a manufacturer of Air Filters and Silencing Equipment.
The original limb patents purchased by Vessa contained numerous innovations. They were lighter, weighing around 2 pounds compared to the 8\/10 pounds of a comparable wooden leg. Cushioning was added to reduce the noise of the device while in use. Indeed, Blatchford limbs were nicknamed ‘The Clapper Leg’ due to the sound they made on full extension. Vokes went on to purchase J.E Hanger in 1958, meaning Vokes now owned two of the three largest producers of lower limb prosthetic devices in Britain; Vessa, Blatchfords and J.E Hanger.<\/p><\/p>

Our range consisted mainly of forged curry combs in various sizes and models, with some cattle combs, mane drags, spiral combs and dog combs.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>

W.H. Tildesley manufactured its own range of products for various core markets of the time, and while working through the historic customer lists for this project it became clear how much business curry combs generated for the early Tildesley works. We have a dedicated pattern book specifically for the range with over 200 unique comb designs.<\/p><\/p>

We produced mainly Cheek Pieces, Mouth Pieces, Bradoon Stampings, Links, and Nameplates.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>

W.H. Tildesley manufactured its own range of products for various core markets of the time, including horse tack. We have a dedicated pattern book specifically for the range. The date range on the drawings indicates that all 120 drawings were produced between May and August 1918. With the abundance and probable near saturation of the local saddle trade, it would have only made good business sense to carry a small range of simple components to sell to saddle makers who perhaps couldn’t afford to produce their own proprietary Lorinery.<\/p><\/p>

Founded in 1946, Walsall Riding Saddle (WRS), started as a workshop focused on a small range of riding saddles. With the range expanding into Bridles, Reins, and saddle trees. The latter of which was spun off into its own company, Walsall Riding Saddle Trees. WRS is still trading to this day, having since merged with another Walsall Saddle Maker; Ideal Saddle, to become WRS Ideal Saddle.<\/p><\/p>

W.H. Tildesley Ltd has strong connections to the War Office and its various divisions, most notably for the production and supply of Horse Shoes and Curry Combs, dating as far back as the Boer Wars.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>

The War Office was a department of the British Government responsible for the administration of the British Army between 1857 and 1964. It housed the directorate and staff critical to recruitment, movement, supply, and top-level military decision-making. They are now better known as the Ministry of Defence (MoD).<\/p><\/p>

W.H. Tildesley Ltd worked with Westland Aircraft during WWII, producing bracketry and spools for their 1941 models.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>

Westland Aircraft LTD was spun off from the already established engine maker Petters Limited, as an entity to fulfil Air Ministry contracts during the First World War. Post-war, the firm would get out of the fixed-wing aircraft market to focus solely on helicopters, this proved to be unsuccessful, with none of the models chosen to go into production.<\/p>\r\n

The company was forced to Merge into the nationalised BAC in 1959, along with most of the British aviation industry.<\/p><\/p>

Founded in 1904 by Walter Wilkins and Thomas Mitchell. Wilkins & Mitchell was a manufacturer of heavy engineering machinery and would later expand into domestic appliances. Walter had previously been head designer at Samuel Platt, a Wednesbury-based manufacturer of heavy machinery and machine tools. The company would develop close relationships with Rubery Owen and The Birmingham Carriage Company, designing and manufacturing several new machines to the company's specifications. Such was the success of the hydraulic presses designed for Rubery Owen, that Wilkins & Mitchell would go on to become the leading UK manufacturer of power presses.<\/p><\/p>

Founded in 1919 and incorporated into a private company in 1927. Based in Station Works, Neachells Lane, Willenhall. The company specialised in pressings for the motor and aircraft trades. The company would be made public in 1936 and would go on to manufacture components for the De Havilland Mosquito during WWII. The company would pick up contracts for body pressings and assemblies from Ford in 1963, but the company would unfortunately become insolvent in the intervening years; being acquired by Armstrong Equipment and Howard Tenens in 1979.<\/p><\/p>

Youngs (Lifting Appliances) Ltd was based out of Ryland Street Works, Birmingham.
They were best known for their worm pully blocks and various other types of lifting and hoisting machinery and accessories.<\/p><\/p>
